ATHLETIC RULING

One-Year Qualification (N.Z.P.A.'Reuter—Copyright) STOCKHOLM. International athletes, in future, will be allowed to switch from one country to another after one year instead of the present three years.

The International Amateur Athletic Federation congress agreed to reviae the rules, provided the move is approved by the I.A.A.F. council and the two national associations concerned.

Previously, an athlete could only qualify to represent another nation after a threeyear residential period in the new country. , A proposal by the British delegate (Mr Harold Abrahams) that athletes should be allowed to accept money for appearing in interviews on radio and television or for writing articles in newspapers was defeated. Several delegates favoured the proposal but in the voting, in which a two-thirds majority was needed for passing, 163 delegates voted for it and 70 against.

Another proposal for better compensation to athletes for lost income was also defeated by 167 votes for and 93 against. Delegates, however, decided to increase pocket money for athletes competing abroad from SUS2 to lUS3 a day.
