Seminar Aims To Stimulate Women

A seminar designed to “stimulate women’s awareness of their right to participate in the affairs of their society,” will be held In Christchurch this month.

Sponsored by the Women’s Advisory Council of the New Zealand Labour Party, the seminar will cover many aspects of training and retraining of women for work in the community. It will begin on Saturday morning, September 19, with an address by Mr D. Van der Es, a personnel manager, who will speak on the employers' point of view. He will be followed by a speaker from the Christchurch Technical Institute, discussing retraining programmes. In the afternoon Mr R. Thompson, reader in sociology at the University of Can-

terbury, wiil speak on the social aspects of women work-

ing. The employees’ view will then be put by a trade union secretary, Mr L. Fortune. A social function, including a floor show, will be held in the evening.

Legal aspects will be covered by a. city solicitor, Mr N. Buchanan, on Sunday morning. His talk will be followed by an address from Miss B. Kelly, ah inland revenue examiner, on how taxa-

tion affects women. Discussion and questions will be chaired by Mrs Doreen Grant. The seminar, which will be held at 127 Lichfield Street, will be the first of similar seminars throughout New Zealt has not been planned as a political seminar, although the council believes there is a place for women in the country’s policy making bodies.
