FITTERS’ DISPUTE
Shut-Down Likely (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept 2. All five freezing works affected by the fitters’ strike had a reduced kill today, and 6000 freezing workers would be laid-off by tonight, the secretary of the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union, Mr T. R. Kelly, said today. The works were running into mechanical trouble in virtually all departments, he said, and members could not work if break-downs were repaired by ‘he companies’ staff. This was the union policy. The 300 fitters—members of the New Zealand Engineers’ Union stopped work on Monday over what they say is the employers’ refusal to negotiate a wage increase. They want 40c added to their hourly rate of $1.31 to $1.33.
