Watch On Wool Auction System
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 1. The Wool Board was continuing to watch the auction system closely to ensure that it continued as a viable force in the selling of wool, the board’s chairman (Sir John Acland) said today.
Although the system had had a good deal of criticism, no-one knew at present any better way of disposing of the bulk of the clip.
“The board’s essential policy is to make steady improvements to the system,” Sir John Acland said. “But if necessary we are prepared to take steps to maintain the validity of the auction system.” He said the board was concerned about the proportion
of the clip—about 15 per cent last season—being sold outside the auction. “At what point this starts to affect the range of wools offered and the competition on the bench is a matter on which opinions differ,” he said. “But we are watching the situation closely."
