Beautification In London
(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. London is beautifying its garbage disposal. “Like an ice-cream factory” is how Mr D. Plummer, chairman of the Greater London City Council, described a new £lO million rubbish-incinerator plant opened recently Workers at the smoke-free plant will wear white labora-tory-type coats. The 1800 tons of garbage arriving daily will not be touched by hand. Reclaimed metal will return the disposers about £250,000 a year. Ash for building and drainage will make another useful byproduct. Electricity worth £500,000 will be made from the heat of the five silent incinerators, working round the clock seven days a week. Next year, the plant will be opened to London families, who may be interested in seeing what happens to their rubbish.
