Jury Service
Sir, —Yesterday 1 received by registered mail a jury summons. A footnote states, inter alia, “If you are over 65 years of age you will not be required to attend." Although the fees for service are but $3.25 daily for a period not exceeding three hours and $6.50 for over, this employment should be most welcome to age beneficiaries over 65 years. If willing, is a man over 65 permitted to serve? The Prime Minister is over 65 and 1 believe Judges of the Supreme Court can sit on the Bench until 72.—Yours, etc., SENEX. August 14, 1970.
[The Registrar of the Supreme Court (Mr P. D. Clancy) replies: “The general qualification for jurors, as provided in Section 3 of the Juries Act, 1908. is that every person between the ages of 21 and 65 who is of good fame and character is liable and qualified to serve as a juror. My understanding of this provision is that a person over the age of 65 is by implication disqualified.”]
