RACING Trentham Campaign For David William

David William, the “star” among the hack hurdlers at the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting, will seek more riches at Trentham next month.

Although he has not had a hard time since the Grand National meeting, David William has been kept in steady work by his part-owner

and trainer, J. L. Barr.

As a lead-up to Trentbam, where on this occasion he will have to compete against open hurdlers, David William will have at least two races oh the flat The first will be either a high-weight or the Ashburton Cup on the second day of the Ashburton County Racing Club's spring meeting on September 12. The other is likely to be the Greymouth Cup early in October. Although he has made his mark as a jumper this winter David William still retains the pace and the stamina to make his presence felt in flat races. At his latest attempt in that role he ran the Grand National Hurdles winner, Sabaean Summer, to half a length in the Jumpers' Flat on Grand National Steeplechase Day.

Still Undecided

Although Barr has a definite campaign mapped out for David William he is still not sure about spring plans for Meldie. Meldie has been entered for the major spring cups in Victoria, but his owners, Messrs C. P. Hayes and M. K. Rodgers, have still made no decision on whether the horse will go to Melbourne. If the Australian trip does not eventuate Meldie may well be at Trentham with David William next month.

On the assumption that Meldie might remain in New Zealand Barr has mapped out a sketchy plan for a spring campaign. More than likely he will be one of David William’s rivals in the Ashburton Cup next Saturday fortnight Then he will probably be taken north to compete at the Cambridge meeting at Te Rapa on September 19. From there the plan is fairly indefinite, but he may continue on to Auckland where there is a three-day meeting at Ellerslie early in October.

Well-bred Youngster

The wife of the Riccarton trainer, M. J. Wadley, will have a well-bred youngster to carry her colours in the two-year-old races later this season. Mrs Wadley has been granted a lease from Mr J.

H. Lindsay, proprietor of the Balcarres Stud, Matamata, of an attractive chestnut filly for her racing career. The filly, which arrived at Riccarton on Saturday, is a daughter of Syntax and the

lightly-raced Messmate mare, Alison’s Pride. Alison’s Pride is a nonwinner—she had only two races in 'Mr Lindsay’s colours as a three-year-old—-but she is a half-sister to three winners. The filly’s granddam, Stellar, won three races as a two-year-old, including the Wanganui Debutante Stakes. She was a half-sister to Surprise Ending, one of Riccarton’s top staying mares a few years ago. Surprise Ending's record included wins in the New Zealand St Leger, the Great Northern Oaks, and the O’Shea Stakes in Brisbane. Major Setback Walaroo, which found winning form early in his spring campaign last season and looked as if he could do so again when fourth among the staying hacks on the final day of the Grand National meeting, has had a major setback. Walaroo has been lame in the near-hind leg since he last raced. If the trouble is, as his owner-trainer, R. P. Register, suspects, a fractured sesamoid bone, the Bellboroligh six-year-old is likely to be out of action for a considerable time. In an attempt to pin-point the trouble Walaroo’s leg was X-rayed yesterday afternoon.
