M. Holmes Drives $23 Winning Double

M. Holmes was seen at his skilful best when he drove Loyal Adios and Bramble Hall to form the winning on-course double combination at Addington Raceway last evening. The return for $1 was $23.80.

Second place to Bramble Hall went to the fast-finishing Royal Count, the concession dividend being $6.

Holmes had an unenviable drive behind Loyal Adios over the last 10 furlongs of the Wildwood Handicap. The front strap of a hopple worked loose and the hopple dropped down and cleared Loyal Adios’s hoof. From then it flapped about his legs, but did not unsettle him sufficiently to cause him to tangle. Holmes drove Loyal Adios with extreme caution about three places back on the inside and eased him out quietly to go round Siouan early in the run home. Loyal Adios was not really tested and came on to beat his stablemate, True Forbes, by a length and a half. There was Mierit in the placing of True Forbes as he was very slow

early. Siouan, after working to the front on the home turn, battled on for a close third, I well clear of Strafe, El I Caballos, Peel Off, Bravine

and False Square, which were close together. False Square covered extra ground and dropped out

Perfect Trail

Bramble Hall received a perfect trail behind Local Lie in the Hillmorton Handicap Local Lie was finished starting the last furlong and Bramble Hall worked clear Royal Count about second last in a close-running field on the home turn, finished with a great burst for second, a long neck from Bramble Hall.

Waratah paced a splendid race from 12 yards to finish third, two lengths from Royal Count with the same distance back to Pun, which was wide for the last half-mile. Inky Boy went a fair race for fifth, just ahead of Monsignor, which was forced three wide for much of the last 10 furlongs. Local Lie tired to seventh. Held On Beau Winter, a good second to Martian on the first day of the meeting, gained an all-the-way win in the Addington Handicap. He responded well

in the run home and won by a neck from All Alone, which broke early and moved up to join Beau Winter on the.bome turn.

Martian finished on boldly over the final furlong to take third place, but he was two lengths and a half from All Alone. Then there was a neck to Dan Mack, which broke early. Fri was a fair fifth, ahead of Magic Time. Fingall and Scotson aso made mistakes. Improver Broadway, fourth nine days earlier, outfinished Kelvin Home by a length in the Second Improvers' Handicap. He was a fair way back early, but improved to be handy for the last mile. Kelvin Home was another well placed all the way and he held on for second, half a length in front of Haughty Scott, which was well back until late in the race. Apollo King received a perfect trail behind Fortunate, but fourth was the best he could manage half a head behind Haughty Scott. Fortunate pulled hard in the lead and tired to fifth a head back, followed by Our Gay and Volo Dor.

The favourite, First Pigeon, broke at the start and did well to finish eighth.

Surprise Win

Promise, having his first start since being bought last week by Mr R. McArdle, of Melbourne, and trained at Templeton by R. W. Curtin, caused a surprise when he led throughout the Queen Mary Handicap. He lasted to hold off Worthy Guest, which received the run of the race, by a neck, with eight lengths back to Royal Step. Pole Used Royal Deeside—racing with a boring pole, to which was attached a plastic pricker, approved by the judicial committee—and Pono fought out a keen finish to the Second Canterbury Stakes. Royal Deeside just lasted to shade Pono by a nose, Pono appearing to be doing the better at the finish.

Royal Ascot, which gradually improved, did well to finish third, but he was three lengths and a half back clear of Courtesy Tedlo, which made up a lot of ground late in the race; Local Chief and Top Tune were next.
