Airline Foils Hoaxer
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 25. Pan American Airways yesterday feigned payment of $lOO,OOO ransom demand to an anonymous caller who threatened to blow-up a Boeing 707 with 148 persons aboard, unless he was paid off. “We made a calculated decision that it was a bluff and went through the motions of paying without ever intending to do 50,7 said an airline spokes man.
The F. 8.1. was alerted to the ransom demand but the spokesman said that as yet no-one had been arrested. The incident followed a similar ransom demand two weeks agb to Western Airlines, which paid out $25,000 to a hoaxer.
