Boatwood Takes Three Badminton Titles

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. P. Boatwood (Canterbury) won three titles in the South Island badminton championships at Oamaru on Saturday. He took the men's singles title when his opponent, J. Lang (Canterbury), defaulted because of injury. Partnered by B. Crofts, Boatwood won the men’s doubles and, with J. Miles, took the mixed doubles. Results included:— Men’s Singles First Round.—P. Boatwood (Canterbury) beat J. Bishop (South Canterbury), 15-5, 15-0; W. Simpson (Southland) beat C. Wood (Canterbury), 15-9, 15-5; B. Crofts (Canterbury) beat M. Creighton (Otago), 17-18, 15-7, 15-12; M. Pascoe (Southland) beat R. Maddigan (Otago), 17-16, 11-15, 15-5; E. Wallace (North Otago) beat H. Little (Canterbury), 15-5, 17-15; J. Lang (Canterbury) beat E. Kirkland (Southland), by default; R. Brook (Otago) beat K. Turnbull (North Otago), 15-6, 15-8. Second Round. Boatwood beat Simpson, 15-9, 15-5; Pascoe beat Crofts, 15-7, 15-3; Lang beat Wallace, 15-4, 15-6; G. Ellis (Canterbury) beat Brook, 17-15, 5-15, 15-4. Semi-finals. —Boatwood beat Pascoe, 15-9, 15-12; Lang beat Ellis, 15-6, 15-7. Final.—Boatwood beat Lang, by default. Women’s Singles First Round.—E. Moore (Otago) beat E. Johnston (North Otago), 11-4, 11-7; J. Fraser (Otago) beat D. Murphy (North Otago), 11-3, 11-9. Second Round.—M. Rennie (Otago) beat J. Miles (Canterbury), 11-7, 6-11, 11-6; J. Shannahan (Blenheim) beat Moore, 11-2, 11-1; L. Roy (Southland) beat Fraser, 11-8, 11-9; W. Richards (Otago) beat A. Blampied (Southland). 11-2, 11-5. Semi-finals.—Shannahan beat Rennie, 11-12, 12-10, 12-10; Roy beat Richards, 11-2, 11-2. Final.—Shannahan beat Roy, 11-5, 11-6. Men’s Doubles Semi-finals.—Boatwood and Crofts beat Wallace and Little, 13-15, 15-12, 15-5; Lang and Ellis beat C. Hendrie (North Otago) and Turnbull, 15-3, 15-8. Final.—Boatwood and Crofts beat Lang and Ellis, 13-15, 15-13, 8-6, after Lang retired injured. Women’s Doubles Semi-finals. Rennie and Fraser beat Miles and E. Lean (Canterbury), 15-5, 15-8; Murphy and Shannahan beat Richards and Moore, 15-5, 15-9. Final.—Rennie and Fraser beat Murphy and Shannahan, 15-9, 15-12. Mixed Doubles Semi-finals.-Boatwood and Miles beat Ellis and Shannahan, 15-7, 15-11; Maddigan and Rennie beat Creighton and Mcßae. 3-15, 18-13, 15-10. Final.—Boatwood and Mlles beat Maddigan and Rennie, 15-1, 15-2.
