FISHING PROJECT

Talks With Japanese A new type of fishing in New Zealand waters, now being investigated, might open up a new avenue for New Zealand fishermen, the managing director of P. Feron and Son, Ltd (Mr M. L. Newman), said on Thursday evening.

His company and a Japanese firm were negotiating to experiment with a programme based on pelagic fish, or those which swim near the surface.

“This is still very experimental, but the successful marketing of a very large catch of pelagic fish is the only way National Development Conference fishing targets can be achieved,” he said.

At present .New Zealand’s fishing industry is based almost entirely on sea bottom trawling. The type of fish which would be sought in the new programme would be those such as kahawhai and mackerel, he said. New Zealand interests will hold 75 per cent of the shares in the new venture. The ships will be New Zealand owned and run with the Japanese supplying technology and markets.

After a survey earlier this year, part of the harvest will probably go for bait in a new tuna-fishing industry based in Nelson and Christchurch.
