Death Squad Strikes

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAO PAULO (Brazil), August 19. The so-called “Death Squad” struck again in Sao Paulo yesterday, killing two men thought to be small-time underworld characters, apparently to avenge the death of a police investigator Who was killed last week-end in a gun battle. The victims, riddled with large-calibre bullets, were found in separate places between Sao Paulo and the coffee port of Santos. The public relations spokesman of the “Death Squad” who identifies himself only as “White Lily,” had told the police and newspapers exactly where the bodies were. Believed to be composed of off-duty policemen, the “Death Squads” are viligante murder gangs that kill criminals and suspected criminals, in an effort to “clean up” crime in Brazil. About four weeks ago, one squad murdered 12 smalltime criminals in a bloody reprisal that lasted five days.
