A phail of blood taken from a women who had died from infective hepatitis was accidentally thrown away by a hospital in Angers, and found its way into the River Maine, according to the town authorities. The incident which led to a full-scale alert, happened when the blood, destined for examination in hospital laboratories, entered the hospital sewer and flowed out into the river that runs through the city. The infection was discovered yesterday by a municipal laboratory during a regular test of the river’s water. The local health authority subsequently warned 150,000 people living in the Angers district that the virus constituted a mortal danger, and ordered them to avoid all contact with the water of the Maine.
