$10,000 Gift For Games

A Christchurch businessman, about to retire, had offered a $lO,OOO gift towards the cost of holding the 1974 Commonwealth Games in the city, said the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) last evening. “The businessman, well known in Christchurch, has said that he will make his gift $lO,OOO. However, if it is subject to tax as a gift, the amount he will give towards the games will be $lO,OOO less the tax,” Mr Guthrey said.

“This is a most generous gift, coming, from a private person. We are hoping for many more gifts of such a size, hut it is to be expected that many of them will be from companies, rather than from private individuals.”
