CUSTOMS WORK

Preventive Service (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 21. Major plans for increasing the effectiveness of the preventive service were announced this evening by the Minister of Customs (Mr Adams-Schneider). These inelude the establishment of an intelligence ' and information centre in the head office of the Customs Department, the encouragement of a closer liaison with the Australian Narcotics Bureau, and an increased staff to enable a 24-hour coverage at some ports which do not have it. Most of the illicit narcotic drugs getting into New Zealand were coming from SouthEast Asia, the Minister said. The closer intelligence links with these countries would be invaluable in drug detection.

“Within New Zealand, the centre will form a base to exchange information with South-East Asian countries, and will also be the nerve centre for preventive service flying squads operating within the country,” he said.
