AUGUST 11 MEETING

Maximum Of 50c (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 21. The chairman of the Cabinet Committee on State Services (Mr Taiboys) said in a statement on the Civil Aviation Division shift-workers’ dispute tonight that on August 11 the committee had agreed to a time and a quarter payment with a maximum of 50c an hour. The grounds for approval were that similar payments of time and a quarter between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. had been made to railways and Post Office staff for many years. The Public Service Association had been told on August 13 that the Government had agreed to meet their claim. The association later advised that it wished to make a further claim for a minimum payment of 65c a shift. It was considered that such a minimum payment could not be considered in isolation. A minimum for airport staff could not be introduced without its being sought by all other State Service shift workers, including those in the Post Office and Railways. Such a proposal must be considered along with related claims being made by other State employee organisations.

Mr Taiboys was informed at a meeting today that the Ministry of Transport staff at Christchurch had further amended their claim by seeking quarter time additional for all shifts between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Boxing Profit.—A four-figure profit was made by the Wellington Boxing Association from the New Zealand light-weight title fight won by R. Redden (Wellington) against R. Carstairs (Christchurch) on Thursday. “We now have a working profit of just over S 1000,” the W.B.A. chairman (Mr B. F. O’Brien) said.
