DIACONATE PROPOSAL

t.V.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY, August 20. The Roman Catholic Church in Australia has decided to establish a permanent diaconate which will allow married men holding secular posts to become deacons of the Church.

The Church’s episcopal conference approved the change yesterday.

At present in Australia, the position of deacon is the final step before ordination into the priesthood. The Most Rev. Edward Kelly, Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, said after the conference that the deacons would do pastoral duties other than those reserved for priests. The permanent diaconite would help to overcome shortages of priests in some areas, he added. Permanent diaconates already exist in some missionary territories in Papua-New Guinea, Latin America, and several European countries.
