Eminent Conductor

Sir, —Recently the musical world has lost two pianists, both conductors, George Szell and Sir John Barbirolli. Szell was for many years conductor of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, one of the greatest orchestras in America, and most musiclovers will remember Sir Joht Barbirolli, conductor of Manchester’s Halle Orchestra. To hear Szell conduct was unforgettable. Szell was fearsome, but a perfectionist and was different from the more gentle Barbirolli. And speaking of great conductors it was a great privilege to hear Dr Otto Klemperer speak from his home in Zurich some weeks ago, and as his health is greatly impaired and he is over 80 years of age, one feels that we will lose him also, honour to whom honour is due. A city without a symphony orchestra is a city without a soul, said one great conductor. I am glad New Zealand has a symphony orchestra. Yours etc.,— THELMA CLAIRMONT. August 20, 1970.
