NEW RANK FOR NAVY

Consideration By Ministry The Royal New Zealand Navy may gain a noncommissioned rank and the Army lose one as a result of Ministry of Defence reorganisation. Both the Army and the R.N.Z.A.F. have a warrant officer rank, but the Navy has not. The possibility of introducing a warrant Officer rank in the Navy has been considered for some time.

At present chief petty officer is the most senior noncommissioned rank in the Navy. The introduction of a warrant officer would bring the service’s senior ratings, into line with those of the other two services. On the other hand, the Army’s warrant officer, second, class, may have to go be-: cause there is no equivalent in the other services. The; R.N.Z.N. had warrant officers until 1956. The Royal Navy, which did away with the rank in 1949, will bring it back next year. In both navies warrant officers were former commissioned officers. The new Royal Navy warrant officers will be non-commissioned and will be employed mainly on managerial duties in positions now held by chief petty officers.
