SHEEPSKIN SALES

Pool To Be Set Up A pool system for marketing sheepskins so that farmers who supply them will obtain the highest possible price will start in Canterbury on September 1. After discussing the matter in committee for an hour, the meat and wool section executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers unanimously carried a motion that it approve and support in principle the establishment of the pool. Mr B. H. Palmer, the chairman of the wool committee, said later that the auction of sheepskins in the pool would stimulate competition. Farmers felt they were not getting realistic prices under the present system. New Zealand Skin Pools will be an association between A. S. Paterson and Company, Ltd, the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association, and farmers in Canterbury. There will be two supervisors—Mr Palmer representing farmers’ interests, and Mr R. Iles, representing the woolbrokers. Mr Palmer said a schedule based on world markets at that time, with a margin for fluctuation, would be set and skins paid for on this. Out of trading profits, suppliers would receive an additional payment in the form of a bonus at the conclusion of each trading period of about three months. Skins could be delivered directly to the pool operator or indirectly through stock and station agents.
