SHIP FIRE

Exports To N.Z. Hit fN.Z. Press Assn.—■ Copyright) SUVA August 19. Fijian fruit and vegetable exports to New Zealand are likely to be hit hard by the fire in the Island trader Taveuni.

A Suva exporter said yesterday that the perishable goods trade would face a bleak period while the Taveuni was being repaired. The ship, badly damaged in Auckland last week, would take thred to four months to repair.

The replacement ship, the Karamu, was smaller than the Taveuni and had no refrigeration. This meant exporters would have to rely on the monthly service of the Tofua, and its space was limited. Banana exports, in particular, would be affected.

The exporter said shipping services between New Zealand and Fiji had never been worse. Fiji importers were placing big orders in North America for onions because of uncertainty on shipping from New Zealand.
