Mr G. R. Gregory Was Noted Cricketer
Mr G. R. Gregory, one of Canterbury's best - known cricketers in the 19205, died in Christchurch yesterday. An aggressive batsman, Mr Gregory played senior cricket for 19 years for the East Christchurch and West Christchurch clubs, beginning in 1919-20 and finishing in 193738, with a career aggregate of 7410 runs and an average of 38.2. He scored 47 half-cen-
turies and nine centuries, with a top score of 129 not out In 1926-27 he topped 800 runs for the season, and the following summer had his I 'highest aggregate, 842 at an average of 64.8. He also took 84 wickets in senior games. In a representative career which lasted from 1922-23 to 1928-29, he played 16 matches, scoring 631 runs, and making (five half-centuries. Mr Gregory was also a senior Rugby player for the Linwood club, a keen golfer, and, in later years, a fisherman. He was a cricket umpire for several seasons. He was in the Royal Air Force during the First World War, and for many years was manager of Quill Morris, Ltd, in Christchurch. He was a member of the United Forces Masonic Lodge. Mr Gregory is survived by his wife and daughter.
Football Death.—An 18-year-old Australian Rules football player died in a third grade match at Perth on Sunday after ,being-injured. He was the first I player to die in the West Australian football league competition for 30 years. Soccer Referee.—A Poverty Bay referee. Mr J. Houston, has been appointed to control the I Gillette Chatham Cup soccer final between Western Suburbs and Blockhouse Bay in Wellington on September 5.
