Injured Skier Wins Race

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) THREDBO (Australia). The West German, M. Rieger, finished with blood streaming from a head wound when he won the Thredbo Cup giant slalom title yesterday. Rieger made a great second run to overhaul the w’orld-class field gaining a .05sec win over his team-mate, C. Neureuther. Rieger, who was fourth in the world giant slalom title earlier this year, seemed to have lost any winning chance in the first run, when his time of 81.51 sec was 2.2Bsec slower than the leader, the young American, E. Poulsen.

This left Rieger in tenth place, and he gambled on a fast second run, in the course of which he crashed heavily into a gate near the finish. His forehead was cut but it did not slow him down. Neiireuther had the second fastest time on the * closing run, also to pass the early leaders. Poulsen, who last year won the Wills international cup at Thredbo, appeared overcautious on his second run.
