DENIAL BY ARBITER
Bus Drivers’ Margin
The independent arbitrator who awarded the Christchurch Transport Board bus drivers a 4c hourly margin (Mr J. D. Gibb yesterday denied that he had said he would release his reasons if he could.
“I can remember' saying I was bound by rules of procedure,” he said. “But I would not say that I would release the details if I could. “This makes it look as if the other people are holding out.”
On Monday Mr Gibb told “The Press” that he had given at some length, to both the Transport Board and the union, his reasons for awarding the 4c. A joint statement issued by the board and union on Monday made no reference to these reasons: and the board’s general manager (Mr J. F. Fardell) and the union secretary (Mr N. Gray) both declined to make them available when specifically asked for them.
