Rex Gains Second Position

Rex A beat Brighton A, 25-23, at Cowles Stadium last evenihg, to overtake its opponent and move into second position in the Canterbury women’s indoor basketball A grade competition. However, Checkers A, which beat Rebels A. 37-23, is still well clear of Rex and seems certain to win the competition for another season. Points are: Checkers A 25, Rex A 19, Brighton A 18, Universtiy A 15, Rangiora A 10, Rebels A 10. Rookies 10. REX A 25: A. Fairhall 10, L. Wilson 5. E. Young 2, B. Miller 2, L. Uren 2, K. Thompson 2, J. Sloper 2. BRIGHTON A 23: E. Butler 8, R. Leask 6, J. Ancall 5. A. Smith 2, C. Symonds 2. Rex won a very even game against its more favoured opponent because it was better able to accept its opportunities., A. Fairhall stood out for some determined drives, but the win was mostly the result of good team-work. RANGIORA A 26: J. Schluter 14. J. Kearney 6. L. Rollinson 4, J. Davison 2. ROOKIES 24: H. Agnew 12. B. Walker 8, B. Martin 2. M. Buskey 2. Rangiora just managed to edge out Rookies in an even but scrappy game. J. Schluter (Rangiora) was the dominant player, leading attacks up the middle and scoring from good shots off the back-board.

Rangiora dominated the rebounds, especially on attack,

where it was often able to have several attempts at goal after regaining possession. For Rookies, H. Agnew and B. Walker were once again the mainstays of the team, throwing long, crisp passes and scoring with accurate set-shots. CHECKERS A 37: J. Harding 12, L. Wilson 6, P. Beban 6, H. Dawson 6, J. Baker 4, C. Gould 3. REBELS A 23: D. Shearer 8, C. McMaster 4, S. Gosney 4. M. McGill 3, C. Cook 2. J. Meyer 2. Checkers began well against Rebels, and led, 21-9, at halftime. An improved performance by Rebels, led by D. Shearer and S. Gosney, enabled the side to score almost as many points as its opponent in the second half. The Checkers’ winning performance was based on allround team effort on attack instead of upon the provincial captain and New Zealand representative. J. Baker, as has usually been the case. This allowed four of Baker’s teammates to surpass her final points total, an unusual occurence. Lower grade results were: A Reserve. —University A 18, Teachers’ College A 17: Y.M.C.A. Test Match Barter (From T. P. McLEAN) SKUKUZA. What is the worth of a ticket to the Rugby international at Cape Town next week? A man in Barkly West, Cape Province, has offered an unusual estimate. By telegraph, he has offered the All Blacks coach (Mr I. M. H. Vodanovich) three ties for one ticket They are the ties of the last Australian cricket tourists—a team not warmly remembered in South Africa—the South African Airways, and the United Party, the official Opposition in Parliament Mr Vodanovich is not impressed. Since his room in Pretoria was raided the night before the first test, and two pullovers and 18 ties were stolen, ties have not been his favourite topic of conversation.
