PROPOSED MONA VALE LAND SALE
The proposed subdivision and sale of land on the north side of the drive to Mona Vale from Fendalton Road was referred to by the Mayor of Riccarton (Mr R. W. J. Harrington) at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council last evening.
At the council’s estimates meeting last month, some councillors had been concerned at the amount of money spent and to be spent on Mona Vale, he said. A special meeting of the Mona Vale management committee had been held last week to discuss finance, and a resumee of proposals showed a large total expenditure. “Obviously, the Riccarton Borough Council felt it should not have to find the amount envisioned,” said Mr Harrington. “Our share would be $20,000. After a lot of discussion, the scheme that
has been brought up twice before—to sell the land on the driveway—came up again. “The proposal now is to subdivide and sell the land. Much as we regret thinking along these lines, we believe that this is the only way to raise money for capital works that have to be done over the next few months. “We were sorry, because we felt that this land could have been given for an old people’s home; but support was not forthcoming. The City Council felt it was fully committed in other directions, though other councils supported the idea. “The only solution, we now believe, is to subdivide and sell the land. The management committee agreed to consider this after it had received a report from the city valuation department as to what the land was worth.”
