Confirmation Service

About 200 persons attended a confirmation service for members of the Anglican Maori community at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Phillipstown. The confirmation was performed by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) who also preached the sermon. After the service a luncheon was held in the church hall. The Maori missioner and vicar of Phillipstown (the Rev. M. M. Mete) spoke on the welfare and future of the young Maori people and trational Maori action songs and poi dances were performed by 24 girls from the Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College. Items were also given by 38 girls from the Avonslde Girls’ High School. Other guests included members of the University of Canterbury Maori Club, the Otautahi Committee and Mr L. Royal, of the Maori and Island Affairs Department.
