U.S. Delays Withdrawal

The United States has agreed that the South Korean armed forces will be modernised before any American troop withdrawal, the South Korean Minister of Defence (Mr Jung Nae-Hiuk) says. Mr Jung, who returned home on Saturday from the United States-Korea defence conference in Honolulu, gave the news in his report on the conference to the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committees. He said that the American delegation, led by the Deputy Defence Secretary (Mr David Packard), had agreed to postpone the talks on United States troop withdrawal until the modernisation of the South Korean forces had been discussed and agreed upon between tiie two governments.
