SALAZAR DEAD

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LISBON, July 27. The former Prime Minister of Portugal, Dr Antonio Salazar, died in Lisbon today, 22 months after suffering a stroke that left him an invalid and caused him to relinquish his authoritarian rule over Portugal’s 10 million people. Dr Salazar was, until his illness, Europe’s longestserving head of government, having been Prime Minister

since 1932, but having had effective control of the nation since the military revolution of 1926, when he was appointed Minister of Finance. Among those present at his bedside when he died were Maria de Jesus Caetano Freire, his housekeeper for the last 40 years, and Dr Eduardo Coelho, his personal physician. The President (Admiral Amerigo Thomaz) now in Africa on a tour of the Portuguese provinces of Sao Tome and Principe, has been notified and is believed to be returning to Lisbon.
