SEMINAR ON DRUGS
Speakers From Sydney A seminar on drug depend* ence and abuse which is being organised jointly by the Life. Line Committee in Christchurch and the Canterbury Association for Mental Health, will be held in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre at Ham on October 3. J, The two guest speakers, Dr S. Dalton and the Rev. T. Noffs, will be brought from Sydney specially for the seminar. Dr Dalton is the director of Wistaria House, a centre for the treatment of drug dependents and alcoholics with the Parramatta Psychiatric Hospital, and Mr Noffs is pastor of the Wayside Chapel in King’s Cross. He was also responsible for the establishment of ;the first drug referral centre in Sydney. Subjects which will be discussed will include the police role in the drug problem, getting in touch with the addict and first aid, the drug scene in London, the school situation, research and community education and preventive measures. The main address titled “Drugs, the Illness of the Community," will be given by Dr Dalton. Persons who will be invited to attend the seminar will include Life Line counsellors, doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers and other persons engaged in related work. The organising committee includes representatives of the Health Department, the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s Department of Psychological Medicine, the University of Canterbury Student Health Service and members of the medical and education professions.
