Polar Flight A United States Navy Super Constellation belonging to the VX6E Squadron, which supports the Antarctic support force flew over the North Pole on May 8. The flight was made during a 13day mission in support of a scientific research programme in the Arctic Circle. The mission involved dropping underwater detonating bombs at various breaks in the ice. As they detonated the bombs sent signals to different • recording stations in the region. The signals are helping scientists to determine the composition of the sea floor under the polar ice-cap. When over the North Pole the plane dropped a hottie containing the names of the crew rkembers.
