Canterbury Beats Ashburton, 3-2, In Women’s Hockey

With its New Zealand tournament team not yet chosen, Ashburton’s trial team gave Canterbury many worrying moments and seriously tested its defence before Canterbury won, 3-2 in a women’s hoekey match played at the week-end. - Ashburton was very quick to the ball, and seemed unperturbed that its opponents were major-section tournament players, Ashburton being a minor-section team. The bumpy ground, especially in the circle area, caused lapses in trapping concentration in both teams. Ashburton, however, was more successful in adjusting to the conditions, its half-line marking the opposing forwards closely. Ashburton's Star S. Lowe, Ashburton's left wing, was the star of her team. She has a great burst of speed which she used to full advantage. and time after time went through the Canterbury defence with little apparent effort. She received good support on attack from the inside left, J. McKay, and the centre-forward. L. Heazky. Beth these players each scored a fine goal from hard shots well out of the defence's reach. • Ashburton's inside right, R. Gordon, backtackled with energy. Ashburton had mirtor lapses of concentration in its own circle, but otherwise held firm. 8. Hopwood kicked strongly in Soal. The backs. A. Dolg and . Buick, covered well, and both showed hard clearing hits. The wing halves, B. Gaze and K. Crowley, played very hard, but at centre-half, J. Gibbs did not see as much play.

Canterbury Disappointing Canterbury was disappointing in Its lack of energy and determination. and seemed constantly to be striving for the upper hand The forward line lacked cohesion, which was Its main downfall. L. Rutledge, at inside right, constantly tried to feed her wing, M. waapu, who had to call on all her skill to stay free. . Not until well into the second halt did she 6aln a little control. K. Maconald. at centre-forward, didn't show up at all apart from scoring the deciding goal. Canterbury's left flank of L. Bayliss and S. Cowles received as much play as Ashburton's left side.

S. Cowles was speedy and positioned herself well in the circle to pickup short rebounds. It was from one of these that she goaled to open the scoring. The inside left, L. Bayliss, scored the second goal with a hard shot. The Canterbury defence had some good moments, but too often the speedy Ashburton players were first to the ball. J. Capetick, at right back, played a steady game, and although suffering a nasty hit on the face, played on. .J. Hamilton, in goal, kicked well. D. McKinnel, at left back, tackled confidently, but was unable to form a link with her half, M. Rankin. A Ruston, at right half, had a good understanding with her back, J. Capstick, these two forming an effective link with L. Rutledge. S. Corner, at centre-half, did not receive much play, but showed good covering play. Umpires Miss G. Bowyer and Mrs J. Chibnall Canterbury B v. Ashburton B In a one-sided match, the Canterbury B team had little trouble assuming control from the opening bully, and played most of the time in Ashburton’s territory. The forwards linked well and moved up-field at a good pace. The han-line Closely supported its forwards, while the backs were able to play well up the field. The Lcentre-forward, and captain, J.

Fookes, scored three joain, (while J. Seebeck, left wing, M. Bennett, right wing, and J Millard, inside right, scored one f;oal each. S. N.
