Gas Workers’ Pay Rise

WELLINGTON, July 26.

Increases in award rates, including special rates paid at the Wellington Gas Company’s works, are provided for in the Taranaki, Wellington, Marlborough, and Nelson Gasworks (more than 12 million cubic feet output) Award, signed recently. Shift workers employed as retort operators, stokers, firecleaners, and tar-plant operators gain $1.85 a shift, giving them a new rate of $9.04 a shift.

Day workers gain increases of up to 22.8 c an hour, giving new rates of up to $1.13 an hour, except for workers engaged in operating automatic gas-making plants, who get $9.40 a shift, an increase of $1.93.
