NEW PLYMOUTH, July 26. A New Plymouth cranedriver was killed when he failed to get clear of hi? overturned machine on a bridge construction job at Te Roti, about seven miles north of Hawera on Thursday. He was
Jack Wetini. aged 42, married, with eight children, of Pembroke Street, New Plymouth. The police said that the crane was taking concrete from a truck and swivelling round to the centre of the bridge. The bucket hanging over a 50ft drop to the Waingongoro River, when the wheeled base began to overturn. Pinned By Cab Mr Wetini attempted to jump clear, but was pinned on the concrete deck of the bridge by the corner of the cab.
The new bridge is being constructed over the river on Skeet Road, about a mile from Te Roti, to replace a bridge washed away in floods two years ago—which washout caused the death Of a motorist who drove into the gap at night, before warning signs had been placed.
