Men’s Hockey Cup Retained

AUCKLAND.
Canterbury, the New Zealand men’s hockey champion, retained the Guinness Cup for the third year in succession when it defeated Auckland, 3-2, at Auckland, on Saturday.
The Auckland players were gallant in defeat. Employing the orthodox 5-3-2-1 formation for the first time this season, they played above themselves. Canterbury was rather disappointing, lacking the forward cohesion of Auckland and finding it difficult to clear the ball against the bustling Aucklanders.
Too often, also, Canterbury’s passes were misdirected, frequently being turned to advantage by Auckland.
Canterbury scored first after 15 minutes when K. Thomson was on hand to flit the ball into the goal after a melee. Five minutes later Auck-
land replied with a great goal, the movement started just outside its own 25-line. All the Auckland forwards figured before L. Ahsam received the ball and R. McHarg in goal had no chance against a stinging shot. Canterbury took a 2-1 lead at half-time when Thomson converted a penalty stroke. Auckland attacked strongly on resumption and I. Free converted a penalty corner after Bmin to even the score at 2-all.
K. Thomson converted a penalty corner to make the final score, 3-2. Canterbury beat Whangarei 4-0, yesterday, after leading 2-0 at half-time. Scorers: B. Aldridge, T. Burrows, B. Maister, J. Christiansen.
