Britain And E.E.C.
Sir, —Mr Marshall makes pessimistic statements about the future of New Zealand should Britain join the E.E.C Has no thought been given to the immense potential of China and Indo-China as a consumer of some of our products? Japan is important, too, but dreams of a rebirth of the Asian “Co-prosperity sphere” threaten to disrupt trade relations with this country. Many Chinese are mutton eaters, and more could be made so. Beef could be another selling product. The Chinese already have many dairy farms, but they would consume more milk products if pressed. Some of the methods used to foist lamb on the Japanese could be used with advantage in the rest of Asia It is surely better to trade with countries near us than
send produce to the other side of the world.—Yours, etc., PJJL July 20,1970.
