Cycling Club’s Championship
M. Payne caused a major upset when he outsprinted eight other riders to win the Papanui Cycling Club's senior scratch championship over a 50mile circuit at Rangiora on Saturday. J. Mullan repeated last year's performance when he took the junior championship over the same distance. Seven miles from the finish Mullan forged ahead and was never in danger of being caught. Results were:— Senior Championship (50 miles). —Payne, 2:4:3, 1: R. Anderson, 2; B. Chisholm, 3. Sealed handicap: Payne (6min), 1: R. Williams (4min>, 2; Anderson (2min), 3. Junior Championship (50 miles).—Mullan, 2:5:55, 1; K. Grogan, 2; C. Tabak, 3. Sealed handicap: P. Burgess (lOmln), 1: Grogan (lmin), 2: Tabak (Imin), 3. Malrehau Club The Malrehau Novice Cycling Club held a criterion race around a one-mile circuit at Brooklands on Sunday. Each lap contained two sprints for which points were awarded to the place-getters. Results were:— A Grade (eight laps).—P. Radburnd, 70 points, 1; P. Jesson. 56, 2; J. Sullivan. 29, 3. Time: 23:31.0. B Grade (six laps).—K. Aitken, 57 points, 1: P. Basher, 44, 2; P. Kennedy. 28, 3. Time: 17.41.0. C Grade (four laps).—B. Radburnd, 32 points, 1; S. White, 30. 2; S. Taylor, 26, 5. Time: 13:10.0.
