SWIMMING COACH
Tractor Death At Massey (N.Z. Prest Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. A former professional swimming coach, Mr Frank D. Hay, was killed when he was pin* ned under the tractor he was driving when it overturned in a paddock in Yelash Road, Massey, on Saturday afternoon. He was 53.
Rescuers struggled for more than three hours to free his body from under the tractor. Mr Hay had been prominent for many years in Auckland swimming circles. He was a professional coach at a number of pools including the Olympic pool, Newmarket and the tepid baths in the city.
After 33 years as a coach be retired in 1967, but took up bis work again last year to coach at the Mount Wellington Swimarama, a position he held at his death.
He coached many New Zealand swimming champions, including Margaret Sweeney, who unsuccessfully attempted to swim the English Channel in the 19605. Mr Hay was also known for his work in teaching crippled children and amputees to swim. Swimmers and spectators attending the first winter meeting of the Auckland Swimming Centre on Saturday night stood in silence as a mark of respect when the news of his death was received.
