S.F.M.-Bowron Joint Tanning Venture
A new tanning company with nominal capital of $200,000 is being formed by the Southland Frozen Meat and Produce Export Company, Ltd, and G. L. Bowron and Company, Ltd.
In a joint statement the chairman of Southland Frozen Meat, Ltd (Mr A. F. Gilkison), and the managing director of G. L. Bowron, Ltd (Mr A. D. Brown), said the company would be registered in the near future. Its substantial factory of approximately 18,000 sq. ft is being built on the S.F.M. property at Makarewa Junction Coinciding with the new killing season, operations will commence next November and initially a staff of 15 will be employed the year round. This is the first time two New Zealand owned companies representing the freezing and tanning industries have combined their resources and expertise and each will make an equal contribution to the new venture. The main objectives are to increase the New Zealand content and the export of one of our significant primary products by further processing in depth. It is anticipated that 180,000 lamb skins will be tanned during the first year of operation, but this quantity will steadily increase as new overseas markets are developed. The directors of Hie new company will be—Messrs D. A. Bowron, G. N. Bowron, and
G. L. Joyce, all directors of G. L. Bowron and representing that company, and Mr K. S. Semmens, a director, and Mr J. C. Scandrett, general manager of Southland Frozen Meat. The board of directors will be under the chairmanship of Mr D. A. Bowron, of Christchurch.
