PLAYERS’ REUNION

Canty Shield Teams A reunion of the players who represented Canterbury In Ranfurly Shield matches in the union’s “golden era” from 1953 to 1956 is one of the activities planned by the newly - formed Canterbury Rugby Supporters’ Club. Confident that the 1970 Canterbury team will survive the first challenge for the shield, from South Canterbury, the club has selected August 29—the day of Waikato’s challenge—for the reunion. The heroes of Canterbury’s last shield period will lunch together and then watch the match from a block of seats in No. 3 stand provided free by the Canterbury Rugby Union. Afterwards, they will be joined by members of the club at a function to be held under No. 1 stand. During the three years in which Canterbury last held the shield, 43 players represented the union. Dr H. C. Burry has settled in England, but the other 42 players have been the subject of an intensive search by the club.
