Blasts In Brisbane
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) BRISBANE, July 17. Hundreds of women ran screaming for shelter through Brisbane’s main shopping street today as a series of gas explosions blasted. round them. At least 32 persons were rushed to hospital by ambulances, while the police and firemen hunted for other casualties.
The pavement was crowded with lunch-time shoppers at the time of the explosions, which shattered store windows and blasted stock displays into the street. The police moved shoppers out, and cordoned off the danger area, fearing further blasts, as firemen dealt with a blaze which continued to burn underground. No deaths were reported, but two men were believed to have suffered serious injuries. An emergency firstaid station was set up on a pavement to deal with minor injuries. Gas company employees, working earlier on the exploded gas main, were at lunch at the time of the explosions.
