Big Transfer Fees Set On Tourists
Heavy transfer fees would be placed on members of the British Rugby league team by their clubs, said the manager (Mr J. B. Harding) when commenting on an Australian report that several tourists would be signed by Sydney clubs in the near future.
A report in the “Sydney Morning Herald” said that P. Lowe, M. J. Reilly, A. Fisher, A. Hardisty and R. Millward would be playing in Sydney next season and that other British players would follow their lead.
“Every member of the British touring party had an approach from one club or another, in Sydney and in
some cases negotiations will continue after they return home,” the report said. “At least two players, Millward and Reilly, have told friends that they will be migrating here whatever happens. No Time Stipulated
“It was thought that the 26 members of the team would be contracted to remain in England for 12 months. But the only stipulation in their contract was that they had to return home with the team. No length of time to stay in England was mentioned.”
Mr Harding said that he was not able to comment on the futures of the players concerned but he was certain that Sydney clubs would have to pay very large transfer fees to obtain their services. Several former British internationals, including T. Bishop, D. R. Bolton, R. Huddart, M. Hicks and J. Mills, have played for Sydney clubs in the last few seasons. Others, such as P. B. Jackson and M. Sullivan, accepted player-coach positions with country clubs.
Golf Qualifier. —The New Zealander, W. J. Godfrey, qualified for the final two rounds of the French Open golf championship, with a two-round total of 139 (69, 70). V. Del Valle (Spain) was leading, on 134.
