Strikes In Australia

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 14. A nation-wide strike which began today will halt the movement of container-ship cargoes in and out of Australia indefinitely. It involves 1600 clerks, storemen. packers and cranedrivers at shipping-container terminals and depots in all Australian capital city ports. The New South Wales secretary of the Federated Clerks’ Union (Mr P. O’Toole) said that a combined meeting of the strikers today decided that the men should remain out at least until Friday, before meeting to review the progress of their claims. As yet, the strike has had no effect on the Union Steam Ship Company’s trans-Tasman roll-on, roll-off shipping service, but it could have if it continued for some time. PETROL SHORTAGE Anxious motorists today threatened to dry up dwindling supplies of petrol as the Australian Council of Trade Unions was asked to intervene in the strike that has closed five of the country’s eight oil refineries. The strike by 1090 refinery maintenance men, is expected to affect industry and public transport seriously if it is not resolved quickly.
