Squash Titles Get Multi-Sponsorship
For the first time in the South Island, a squash rackets tournament is to be multisponsored.
This year’s Canterbury championships will be held under the method of sponsorship which originated at the Henderson club (Auckland) four years ago. The High School Old Boys’ club, which is organising the Canterbury championships, has on its committee Mr V. Hargreaves, formerly of the Henderson club, who was re-
sponsible for initiating the scheme in Christchurch.
Because of the generosity of the sponsors, 13 players have been invited to compete. They are: L. Greene (Hamilton); N. Barbour (Henderson); R. Grant (Dunedin); G. A. Davidson, B. J. Rippin, M. Billington (Timaru); G. L. Bird (Ashburton); D. R. Preston, J. H. N. Pine (Christchurch); Miss C. Fleming (Eden, Epsom); Mesdames P. Buckingham (Remuera); R. Woodhead, P. Leopold (Christchurch). The two North Island men should add colour to the tournament. Greene reached the semi-finals of last year’s national championships in Christchurch and was chosen in the New Zealand side which later visited Australia. As a result of this trip, Greene is reported to be a vastly improved player. Barbour was captain of the colts team which recently returned from a successful Australian tour. He will be remembered in Christchurch as a member of last year’s Henderson Cousins Shield team which won the national teams’ event.
As yet, not all of the invited players have indicated whether they will accept, but it is expected that the majority will do so.
