ELECTRICITY CHARGES

( Society Seeks Reduction The New Zealand Clean Air ' Society will ask the Muncipal Electricity Department for a reduction in power charges. The society’s annual meeti ing decided unanimously to write to the department requesting a review of charges. It will also ask to meet the City Council’s M.E.D. committee to consider the proposal. The aim of the move is to bring about cheaper heating charges to promote the use of 1 electricity as a fuel, instead of coal. Proposing the request, Mr W. B. Sykes said that if the M.E.D. was to lower its charges to 0.4 c a unit for 12 hours a day, pollution would be “banished overnight” from - Christchurch. The new president (Mr P. V. Neary) said there should be no reason for concessions ' not being made in charges : for peak electricity loading.
