Tunnel Hero Praised

(N.Z. Press Association)

HAMILTON, June 12.

The Commission of Inquiry into the Kaimai Tunnel collapse today paid tribute to the hero of the disaster, the tunnel shift boss, Mr M. Hemopo. The commission’s chairman (Mr A. W. Yortt), called Mr Hemopo forward before ending the hearing. “This commission,” he said, “felt this inquiry could not conclude without making reference to the part you played in the cave-in.

“There is no doubt your presence in the situation . . .

was invaluable. Your calmness and coolness must have given a great boost to the morale of your companions. “There is no doubt your courage and command of the situation saved the life of Mr Neely, and of Mr Gilheany as well.”
