Lichfield Street Parking

Sir,— Why is all-day parking allowed on only one side of Lichfield Street in the block between Fitzgerald Avenue and Barbadoes Street? Firms in this block have off-street parking for their customers, so why leave so much valuable parking space vacant when we, the citizens who work there, could „be using it? 1 have sometimes had to walk a mile or more to my place of employment when parks on the appropriate side have been simply no-existent, while the other side of the street has often been completely free of parked cars. Is this yet another example of thoughtlessness on the part of the authority concerned? —Yours, etc., FED-UP FEMALE.

June 4,'. 1970. [Mr J. F. Thomas, Christchurch superintendent, Road Transport Division, Ministry of Transport, replies: “The unilateral restriction to which your correspondent refers has been applied in this area to cater for the demands of both the long-term and shortterm parker. If the existing restrictipns were removed all the available kerbside parking would .be occupied by the allday parker, and as a consequence the double stopping of other vehicles could create an undesirable situation.”]
