Fine Gallop By Hack At Awapuni Yesterday

“The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The hack sprinter, Mr Sovereign, took the honours at Awapuni yesterday morning with a dashing trial over three furlongs on the course proper. He carried a big weight but was doing better than his stablemate, Big Jim, at the finish.

Aeolian was responsible for another bold gallop. He ran the best halfmile and shaded BiUy Joe. BiUy Joe has not pleased trainer Joe Shaw this week and wiU not start on Saturday.

The Northern visitor, Ramlegh, worked as well as any horses over some ground and he looks ready for an improved race in the Manawatu Winter Handicap. Work on the course proper took place very wide out. The ground was slightly improved from the first day of the meeting but it should be puggier on Saturday. The trainer, A. Jones rode Mr Sovereign over three furlongs with Big Jim, which carried a lighter weight. They recorded 37 2-ssec with Mr Sovereign going very easily at the finish. He has not looked back and, if anything, he seems better now than at this stage last week. He will carry 9st 71b in the Suburban Hack Handicap and in spite of the weight he should be hard to beat. Thriving Aeolian did much better than Billy Joe over half a mile in 52sec, the last three in 39sec. Aeolian has done everything right this week. It will take a good one to beat him in the Members’ Handicap. Ramleigh was shading Bagheera at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 38 2-ssec. The last three in 40 2-ssec. Ramlegh never carries much condition but on yesterday’s work he will have to be respected in the first leg. Charm Ming was doing better than Hori and Noble Chance over the final stages of a mile in Imin 56 4-ssec, the last three in 45 2-ssec. Charm Ming can do better than he showed last week He will have a change of rider on Saturday. J. R. O'Neill will have the mount in the Farewell Handicap. Ascona and Cuban Queen ran half a mile in 55sec, the last three in 42sec. Ascona is an improving maiden with a good chance on Saturday. Silver Script was doing better than Orinoco at the end of five furlongs in Imin 9sec, the last three in 41sec. Silver Script is well and has an excellent chance in the hack sprint. Lazy Trial Agricca was just ahead of Extra Fair with a gap to Arcon at the completion of half a mile in 52 3-ssec. The last three in 39 3-ssec. Arcon went lazily but the other two impressed, especially Agricca, which is capable of a bold race in the Sapling Stakes.

Master Leigh and Indian Chief ran a mile in Imin 57 sec the last three in 44 2-5 sec. Indian Chief failed to handle the going at Wanganui. He looks fit and has a chance in the Manawatu Steeplechase. After jumping four hurdles In line style Gold Mint and purakau ran six furlongs In Imln 25 2-ssee, the last three In 42 2-ssec. Gold Mint looks In line fettle for the Awapuni Hurdles. Sir Blue wound up his preparation tor the Manawatu Steeplechase when he worked over a mile, the last six in Imin 27sec and the Anal three in 43 3-ssec. His flrst-day race has Improved him considerably. Karachi went from the seven

furlongs and took 57 3-ssec for his last half-mile, the last three in 43 3-ssec. His jumping stablemates, Demar and Victory Prince, were given light tasks. They travelled well. G. Carson will ride them on Saturday. Fit Sprinter On the plough Bellamour ran the last three furlongs of her work in 38 8-ssec. Her condition is hard to fault and she should rale well in the Members* Handicap. Shire Lass took 53sec for her half-mile and, was working keenly at the finish. No rider has been engaged for her in the Farewell Handicap. After jumping two hurdles well, San Leonardo ran six furlongs in imin 24sec, the final three in 41sec. He could be prominent for a long way in the 4wapuni Hurdles.

On the inside trial Cervantes and Santide completed half a mile in 50 3-ssec, the last three in 37 3-ssec. Our Baby shaded Kirkman over five furlongs in lipin 3sec, the final three in t7sec. Golden Aurora and Edward James ran six furolngs in Imin 10 3-ssec, the last three in 39 l-ssec. Joy Maree and Banagh recorded 87 4-ssec for three furlongs, and finished together. Red Wolf took Msec and went very easily. He is a likely improver for the Farewell Hack Handicap. Darron was timed from the five furlongs in imin 0 2-ssec, the final three in 40 T-ssec Prove It jumped much better than Rommel over six hurdles. Prove ft went well enough to be given a chance this week. Fast Jumping Rev went fast ever four hurdles and Pawa’s Lad was a little more impressive than Royal Cabana when they jumped four. Pawn's Lad might need the experience on Saturday but this was an encouraging effort on his part. Lyn Abbey lost her rider at the second fence when going with Purakau and Gold Hint. Taken back later she jumped two hurdles safely. Rashid was net impressive in a schooling bout over country. He was hesitant at some fences and baulked more than once. Paddy's Escort ran an easy mile on the course proper. He is not a certain starter in the Manawatu Steeplechase though any rain before the week-end would improve his chances of running. The first day winner. Dasheen was let off with easy work. She will probably have a sprint today. She has done well during the week. Macquarrie worked over two on the plough. He travelled well and looks fit for the Manawatu Steeplechase. G. R. Bell will ride him.
