COMMUNITY USE
Suggestion For Buildings •
School committees had a special responsibility to ensure the restoration of the school as a focal point of a community, the Labour member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr T. M. McGuigan) said in an address to the Canter, bury School Committees’ Association.
“School buildings, the grounds and other facilities are under-used today, and 1 am convinced that they should be used to keep youth, and possibly others not so young, occupied in their leisure time.” “It is a tragedy that in New Zealand millions of dollars are wrapped up in school buildings which are used for only part of the day.” Through the use of school * facilities school committees • would be a real force in com- ’ bating potential delinquency, ’ Mr McGuigan said. “Is it not therefore within . the scope of school committees to organise, at local level, neighbourhood recreation, and where necessary to provide for adequate supervision of out-of-school activities?” he asked.
