SPEED ZONES
Absolute speed limits are expected to be abolished in all Australian states within a year, and instead speed-zoning will be introduced nation-wide, with limits up to 90 miles an hour on back-country roads. At present speed limits differ from state to state, and travellers quickly become confused. Queensland and Canberra have absolute limits of 60 miles an hour, Western Australia and Tas-
mania have absolute limits of 65 miles an hour, Victoria and New South Wales have prima facie limits of 60 miles an hour, and the South Australian limit is a prima facie one of 65 miles an hour. Absolute speed limits were ridiculous on modern highways, the Transport Minister of South Australia (Mr C. M. Hill) said recently in discussing the proposed changes.
